This “Baronial Hall” feature of the House has a dramatic chequerboard floor of Welsh slate and Cornish or York stone imported from Britain in the 1860’s. The theme continues in the armorial window and the oak beamed ceiling with shield decorations.

The Main Entrance Hall features a staircase of polished jarrah and cast-iron bulustrading gracefully following the slope of the stairs, featuring small gilt crowns.

The stained glass window above the first stair landing bears the coat of arms of Queen Victoria and is an excellent example of armorial stained glass from the Victorian era. 

The cornices in the ceiling of the entrance hall are decorated with a series of miniature painted shields of the Arms of the Sovereigns of England from William I to Queen Victoria and are by J G Crace of London, a master craftsman and colleague of Augustus Pugin, famous for his work in the House of Lords at the Palace of Westminster in London.

This is the main entrance to Government House for official callers and guests.
