Artsource - Visual Artists' Lifetime Achievment Celebration
by His Excellency Dr Ken Michael, AC Governor of Western Australia
Julie and I are pleased to be here this evening to share in this wonderful celebration of two Western Australian artists who have made such an extraordinary contribution to the visual arts over many decades.
But, before I continue, I would like to acknowledge the traditional Nyoongar custodians of the land where we are holding this event this evening. It is important to recognise and acknowledge the contribution of the Indigenous people – as custodians of this land for many tens of thousands of years before European settlement – as we continue to work towards meaningful and practical reconciliation.
Hans Arkeveld and Nalda Searles both fully deserve this acknowledgement of their lifetime achievements and I congratulate them both on this presentation that honours their significant impact on and contribution to the visual arts here in Western Australia.
I also would like to congratulate Artsource on this important initiative. It is the first time that the organisation is officially acknowledging the lifetime achievements of artists’ contributions to the visual arts.
I am aware that Artsource sees it is a new step forward and I am certain that it has wide support among the artistic community.
Tonight, we are honouring Hans and Nalda, two outstanding artists whose work over many decades stands out particularly because of their individual community involvement. In many ways, this is what sets them part; it is not just their exceptional art practice but their generous sharing of their talents, time and skills with diverse communities locally, nationally and internationally.
We are all aware that Nalda has had a deep affinity with Indigenous communities for many, many years resulting in some very powerful and exciting exhibitions and works. In particular, I noted her extensive work on fibre basketry with the Martu people in the Jigalong and Punmu communities in the Western Desert, acknowledging also how widely she has engaged with other communities and regions. By way of coincidence, just two weeks ago, Julie and I visited the Jigalong and Punmu communities and witnessed the exquisite, colourful and intricately woven baskets first hand.
Hans has had an amazing association with science, medicine, students and the academic world with his extraordinary drawing work that spans 40 years with the School of Anatomy and Human Biology at The University of Western Australia. This is where I had the pleasure of witnessing some of Hans’ special work during my involvement with the University Senate some years ago. In fact, he still has a studio at UWA. I can recall, as Chancellor of UWA, unveiling one of his sculptures at the Memorial Garden Dedication at the School of Anatomy and Human Biology some years ago. Hans named the sculpture “Celestian”, which depicted a winged embryo perched on a wheel, symbolising the cycle of life.
Both artists, as I say, stand out for their very fine contributions to the visual arts and to the many communities who have benefitted greatly from their knowledge and involvement. Both can be very proud tonight – as we all are – of their achievements.
This event is about strengthening the recognition and significance of the visual arts in our community.
Art – in all its forms – adds to the depth and breadth of our understanding. It is an important balance between economic and financial considerations within our social environment and gives us the means by which we share our stories, our experiences and the way we relate to each other.
The support by government as well as the private sector is important and ensures that Artsource can get on and do the work that is necessary to advance the profile of our visual artists.
This is a special celebration and one, as I mentioned earlier, that Julie and I are delighted to share with you all.
To Nalda and Hans, my congratulations to you both on your lifetime achievement awards tonight. I am sure I speak for all of us when I say that we look forward to your continued long contribution to the visual arts with your wonderful and inspiring work.
