Welcome to the Ballroom Refurbishment.
Government House Ballroom is a major part of the building fabric of Government House. The Ballroom operates as a venue to support the office of the Governor, the Government and also available for some public functions. The Ballroom was in need of urgent maintenance works and alterations to maintain its standing as a place suitable for both Vice Regal and public use.
The 1990 Conservation Plan indicated the need for a total refurbishment of the Ballroom including a bold plan to replace the clay tiles on the roof with slate as it had been originally. A second concept for refurbishment in 1998 included lifts, disabled access, upgraded toilets, decoration, carpets and improved services and airconditioning. Unfortunately funding was not available for this project.
The current refurbishment commenced with the concept designs in 2002/3.
Builders – Geo A Esslemont & Son
Project Managers – Department of Housing & Works.
Architects – Considine & Griffiths; Bateman Grundmann Wilson.
The project has been completed for an estimated actual cost of $2.8 million.
