Julie Michael was born in 1938 in Perth where her father, Con Kalaf, ran a business in the city. She commenced her education at St Brigid's Convent School in Perth before her family moved to Sydney, where she continued her education at Sydney Church of England Girls Grammar School (SCEGGS).
She then moved with her family back to Perth, where she became a Dental Nurse with Schruth, Murphy and Goodall. She met Ken Michael in 1957 and in 1964 they were married. They then moved to London, where Dr Michael obtained his post graduate degree.

While in London, Mrs Michael worked in the Orthodontic Department of the Dental School at Guy's Hospital. The Michaels returned to WA after 3 and a half years in London and their children, Philippa and Justin were both born in Perth.
In 1975, Dr Michael's work with the Main Roads took the family to Geraldton for 3 years. During this time, Mrs Michael worked in the Dental Therapy Clinic at the Allendale Primary School where their children were attending.
On returning to Perth, Mrs Michael worked at the School of Dental Therapy at Mt Henry Hospital.
She became involved in social activities associated with the then Australian Administrative Staff College, Mt Eliza and was President of the Ladies Group for a period for 2 years. She subsequently became involved with Wesley College, becoming President of the Ladies Auxiliary for 2 years. Mrs Michael also worked in the fashion industry for more than 12 years.
Mrs Michael has always been dedicated to her family and has supported Dr Michael and their children in their various pursuits. She is now extending this support to her four young grandsons, including twins, and a granddaughter.
Mrs Michael loves to entertain and her passion for cooking has continued even while at Government House. She is very proficient at screen-printing, upholstery, quilting and embroidery and her other interests include gardening, music and the Arts.
